Actress Dixie Carter, best known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on the TV show “Designing Women,” has died, her agent said Saturday. She was 70.

She was 70. Carter died from complications arising from cancer, her publicist, Steve Rohr, said Sunday.

Carter was drawn to roles portraying steely Southern women. One of her more recent roles included a guest appearance on the show “Desperate Housewives,” for which she was nominated for an Emmy in 2007.

Is Jully Black stealing music?

Nov 17, 2009 9:56 AM
SoulMatters Blogger

Canadian R&B diva Jully Black has made a name for herself as a hard-working and determined singer. She went from singing hooks on hip-hop songs with acts like Choclair, Kardinal Offishall and even collaborated with Nas and several other international stars before she dropped her own albums, This is Me (2005) and Revival (2007).

However, according to a source close to Lunatics of Sound, a Toronto-based DJ/remix trio, their remixed version of Black’s “Seven Day Fool,” which ended up on a top 10 chart in Germany, is about to spoil the singer’s squeaky clean image.

The source reports that Lunatics did the remix, it was rejected by both Black and her label, Universal Music, but rather than it being destroyed, it was used and they did not receive any remuneration for it.

Recently, Black has made an attempt to pay the trio for their work, however, according to the source, her offer is far from "fair".

Mark Quail, lawyer for Lunatics could not comment on the specifics of the case, but he said the matter is likely going to become a legal issue.

“While I cannot comment in detail on a matter that may be before the courts shortly, what has happened here is copyright infringement and it violates the rights of these musicians,” he said.

This situation is rather ironic. Just two years ago, Universal reported that it was exploring the possibility of introducing an internet service provider (ISP) music file-sharing tax, and now the company is implicated in doing the very thing it wants to stop.

“The thing is Universal Music sues people all the time for file sharing and downloading, and here it is they’ve taken all rights and sold it without permission,” the source added.

There’s no telling when, or if, this situation will go to court, but it’s definitely a case of the shoe being on the other foot.

Black has struggled to sell albums, in large part due to illegal file sharing. Is she now implicated in the very same act she herself has suffered from?

Time will tell.

Femi Kuti rocks Toronto's Harbourfront

Nigeria's own Femi Kuti, son of the great Fela Kuti performed an amazing 2 hour set at Toronto's Harbourfront centre tonight.

Preceding him was King Sunny Ade, another musical genius.

Couldn't get any decent shots of the show since the place was packed but it was definitely an event.

Afro beat is not for everyone. Some find it repetitive; others just don't get it.

Tell us what you think?

Public memorial for Jackson now to be held at Staples Center

Jul 2, 2009 8:13 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

The saga continues since MJ's death. The family has now decided on a public memorial at the Staples Center in LA next Tuesday.

There's further drama with Debbie Rowe, the mother of Jackson's kids who is now coming forward saying that she wants custody of the kids. I mean, she is their "mother" but time will tell.

This man has almost as much drama around his death as he did his life. May he rest in peace.

Jackson funeral to take place at Never Neverland

Jun 30, 2009 9:09 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

Jackson funeral set for Friday July 3 at Never Neverland.

There's no words to describe what this man meant to not just the music industry but to the world. He was a creator. He was an originator. And, he was a humanitarian.

The other side to Michael Jackson though is that he was a troubled person. He was saddened by the lack of a childhood. He was devasted by a skin disease. He also had body image struggles as evidenced by his numerous nose jobs and facial changes over the years.

Outside of all that, there is only and will only ever be 1 Michael.

We will miss you.....

I'm not a hater, but it's time to sit back and ask one serious question, WHEN DID HIP-HOP LOSE IT'S EDGE?

Bloody hell.

Kae Sun Signs to URBNET Records in Canada: Preps New Album 'Lion on a Leash'

Jan 29, 2009 11:18 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

Hamilton, Ontario based singer/songwriter Kae Sun has inked a deal with Toronto's based URBNET Records. The agreement will see Kae Sun release his debut full-length album, Lion on a Leash, through URBNET on August 25th 2009. Kae Sun joins fellow labelmates Grand Analog, Moka Only and The Carps.

Kae Sun emerged with his debut EP, Ghost Town Prophecy, on London, UK-based Last Press Label in 2007. This EP landed on the front page of iTunes Canada upon release, and was subsequently covered by MySpace, Toronto Star, The National Post, Globe and Mail and Echo Magazine. It was #138 on Earshot's top 200 list for 2007, and grabbed five #1 slots and charted for 16 weeks on campus college radio. While Ghost Town Prophecy showcased Kae Sun's blend of hip-hop, rock, jazz and funk through six varied, full-band compositions.

Lion on a Leash marks a change of direction with Kae Sun. In this set, Kae Sun turns to a more acoustic, urban-folk influenced sound. Flecks of Afrobeat, spoken word, gospel and hip-hop ebb and flow through Lion on a Leash, but all in all it is a more focused, folk-influenced collection. Emphasis is placed on simple chord progressions and political lyricism, in which Kae Sun discusses the concept of the human condition from love to greed, injustice to poverty.

The album is currently being recorded in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario.

Da Brat Behind Bars
Monday August 25, 2008 @ 04:00 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

Da Brat

Da Brat has been sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting a woman in an Atlanta-area nightclub last October.

The 34-year-old female rapper (real name Shawntae Harris) will also be under probation for seven years and must perform 200 hours of community service. She pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault following an incident last Halloween at Jermaine Dupri's Studio 72 club, where she got into an argument with Atlanta Falcons cheerleader Shayla Stevens — with whom she'd had a previous physical altercation — who was working there as a waitress. Da Brat struck the woman in the face with a rum bottle and the victim received numerous cuts. She's now permanently scarred.

Da Brat faced charges in 2000 for allegedly beating a woman with a gun in another Atlanta-area nightclub. The victim received six stitches for a head wound in that case, which didn't make it to trial after Da Brat agreed to perform 80 hours of community service, serve a year's probation and pay a $1,000 U.S. fine after she pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless conduct.

Da Brat is a protege of Dupri, a prominent rapper, producer and record executive who signed her to his So So Def label. Her biggest hit was 1994's "Funkdafied" single and debut album. She's guested on songs by Mariah Carey, Missy Elliott, Brandy and Destiny's Child.

Da Brat was part of the fourth season cast of the reality television series, The Surreal Life, where she feuded with the Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin in 2005. She feuded with Dustin Diamond (Saved By the Bell's Screech) on the fifth season of Celebrity Fit Club last year.

The moral of the story is: if you hang out in Atlanta clubs or are a cheerleader/waitress, Go-Go's guitarist or an annoying, washed-up actor, don't mess with Da Brat.

Mutlu's Keeping Philly Soul Alive

SoulMatters Blogger

Philly Soul Rises Again With Mutlu's First Full-Length CD Release "Livin' It"

Mutlu's first full-length CD Living It, available in-stores and online since July 22nd, is proof that the Philly Sound is alive and well.

A culmination of 70's soul, R&B and pop, Living It was produced by T-Bone Wolk (Hall & Oates, Elvis Costello) and features special guest performances by Philly's finest including Daryl Hall, Amos Lee and G. Love, as well as rising R&B star Raheem DeVaughn.

Philly born and bred, Mutlu started out at local open-mic nights before befriending Blue Note artist Amos Lee who gave him a shot to hit the road. Mutlu has since evolved into his own groove, mixing soulful sounds with a funky beat and enough optimism to raise the collective human roof. A talented and charismatic performer live, Mutlu recently had the opportunity to be the opener for Daryl Hall, Joe Jackson and British soul singer Adele. A relative unknown to their respective audiences, Mutlu averaged sales of 100 CD's per night proving if he plays, they will buy. More live dates to be announced shortly.

Living It marks Mutlu's first full-length release for the EMI-based Manhattan Records.

Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger won't be able to drive for a year and must pay a $600 fine after being sentenced on Thursday for drunk driving.

Kroeger (real name Chad Turton) was found guilty earlier this month of driving with a blood-alcohol level almost twice the legal limit and appeared in court in Surrey, B.C. to be sentenced on Thursday. He could spend six months in jail if he breaks the driving ban.

The Stone Angel opens across Canada May 9

Apr 27, 2008 4:16 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

So The Stone Angel is another adaptation of a Canadian literary legend. This time around, it's Margaret Laurence. The movie stars some serious heavyweights for a Canadian production. Directed by Kari Skogland, it stars Ellen Burstyn and Ellen Page, and is probably going to be one of those films, like Sarah Polley's Away From Her, that will hit the cinematic world by surprise.

The story is centred on the life of Hagar Shipley, a "mature" woman who is reflecting upon her life choices and her turbulent past.

It's probably no coincidence that this film is being released Mother's Day weekend. It'll probably be a nice film for daughters to share with their mothers.

Does anyone remember that Dame Judi Dench and Kate Winslet film a few years back, Iris? I wonder if this will be a little like that? Totally different story but it's the old Hollywood and new Hollywood pairing that makes me think of that film. Should be a good one, anyhow.

Check out the trailer, if you're curious:

Kurtis Blow rocked it in Pickering, ON

Apr 25, 2008 2:04 AM
SoulMatters Blogger

Just got back from seeing one of hip-hop's founding father's Kurtis Blow and to say that he rocked it is actually an understatement. It wasn't too busy at the Jukebox Live, but this guy is a seasoned professional. He said 35 years in the hip-hop biz, and can he ever hype a crowd. He even breakdanced!!! Amazing!

Young bloods coming up in the game really need to take a lesson from old cats like K. Blow because he's the real deal. And, he can still cold rock a mic too!

Junos ---decent show this year!!

Apr 7, 2008 12:04 AM
SoulMatters Blogger

The junos was good this year. I mean, Feist won just about everything but deservingly so. Great voice. She'll be around for a while...we can only hope.

It was nice to see a mix of artists on the show this year. Big ups to Jully Black for holding it down closing out the show.  Big tune Seven Day Fool. She looked great and sounded amazing! It's nice to see the show finally added a bit of colour.

As for Russell Peters, what can you say.  He's holding it down for brown folks man, seriously nice to see. Maybe next year they'll actually take it one shade further and have a black person host...we'll have to wait and see.

All in all, definitely positive signs forward. Although, where's the love for hip-hop man? It's like cats are touring the country, cutting albums with big acts around the world yet they never get any love on the televised show. I mean, Belly held it down with Deborah Cox but presenting an award hardly counts as an appearance.

One day hip-hop, one day. Until then, the show is definitely getting better....

Yup, the diva is back with a new album, out in Canada on March 4th. She's honestly got to be the most original artist in the soul world right now. Nobody can dare say that Badu is ripping anyone off. Well, ok, sure she uses samples just like the next guy but that ain't nothing new, sampling been going on since the 50s if you want to go there, but I digress...

I found the Grammy's to be soo average I couldn't even watch the whole show. Music is really in a bad place right now. No matter how much they try to hype it with the red carpet and all that, it's just lacking in something. Oh right, talent. That's it. :)

Q-Tip's got a new album due out soon

Jan 25, 2008 12:26 PM

Tribe Called Quest frontman's got a new album coming out, Live At The Renaissance. I heard a track off his myspace page and it's hype. He's honestly one of the greatest man because he pushes the music without selling out. If he calls a woman a bitch or a ho, there's at least some context! LOL. Naw, I'm kidding but seriously, he's a true story teller, both him and Phife, although, Phife ain't too hype on his own.

Hope to post some links to tracks once they're released. Hip-hop ain't dead. People just have stopped believing in it.

Heath Ledger dead at 28

Heath Ledger was found dead today in his Soho apartment. They don't know yet if it was a drug overdose but there are signs that it could have been. Unbelieveable! I didn't even realize he was sooo young. I did, however, think it was odd when he divorced and then seemed to always be all scruffy in public. It's the first loss of the year in Hollywood but something tells me, it won't be the last. So sad.

Rapper Nate Dogg paralyzed after stroke

Jan 21, 2008 7:25 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

Hey gang,

I snagged this off the Chart Attack website. So sad.....

Rapper/singer Nate Dogg is paralyzed on his left side after having a stroke over the holidays.

The four-time Grammy Award winner's manager, Rod McGrew, says there's a good chance for a full recovery since there was no brain or voice damage. Dogg (real name Nathaniel Dwayne Hale) is experiencing problems with his sense of touch and the ability to walk correctly. Snoop Dogg's cousin is recovering in an occupational rehab facility.

"On behalf of Nate, he would like to thank all of the well-wishers, both friends and fans," McGrew told MTV News. "He appreciates it deeply, and he plans on fully recuperating and getting back in the studio."

Dogg turned 39 on New Year's Day. He's released four solo albums and collaborated with a variety of hip-hop artists, including Warren G, Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, Eminem and Ludacris.

Hip-Hop acts using steroids?

Jan 15, 2008 7:51 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

OK, so it's not enough that we blame them for youth violence, misogyny, and the exploitation of women, now we're accusing them of using steroids. Where does it end?

If you haven't heard, 50 Cent, Timberland, Wyclef Jean and hip-hop soul artist, Mary J. Blige, have been named for using steroids that help them lose weight. What does this have to do with their music again? I'm sure they've done and maybe even do worse drugs, but just why is it our business? It's one thing when athletes use but why should be care when an artist uses it?

Amy Winehouse a blonde?

I saw a story online today that the UK soul singer has gone blonde. I hope she's not trying to follow in Brittany's footsteps, as if she doesn't have it screwed up enough as it is. What is going on in the singing world man? Seriously, this is an interesting time to be living in. It's like everyday you get up and some other singer is off their rocker. And yet, blonde is still the hair colour of choice. Seems a bit like a curse, unless you're naturally that way, which is like less than 5% of the population. I wonder why real blondes don't get mad about these bottle blondes stealing all their thunder? Does that question answer itself? I hope not. I'm actually serious.

This video was directed by Charlie Kaplan for Eilrack Productions, and shot entirely in Long Island, NY. Anime's management comments: "It was important to all of us to bring a certain element back to the Hip Hop forefront. This video contains the 4 basic elements - DJing, Graffiti, B-Boying, MCing - on top of a real fun vibe rarely seen in Hip Hop videos these days."

Kanye West's tragedy

Nov 14, 2007 8:56 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

I'm sure everyone knows by now that his beloved mother Donda West died earlier this week due to complications from plastic surgery. They say she had a tummy tuck and breast reduction but was warned by doctors not to have the procedure because of a pre-existing thyroid problem.

This is such a tragedy. You might not like Kanye's music but everyone knows that boy loved his momma.

It's hard to say if this is Dr. West's fault or the fault of the doctor, or maybe a bit of both. Oh,  I call her Dr. because she had been a professor for like 30 years or something like that before quitting to be her son's manager. Hollywood is a bitch man. I wonder if she felt she needed the surgery before her face and image was plastered everywhere. How we perceive our bodies is sometimes so powerful that it makes us start to develop a warp perception of beauty. The woman wasn't perfect but she certainly wasn't hideous.

Sad to say it but how much you wanna bet Kanye's next album will be off the charts. Good because I was getting sick of him, now I feel for him. Strange.

Neo Soul Cafe

This is seriously one of the best web music sites. www.neosoulcafe.com. While SoulMatters is obviously cream, neo soul cafe is a non-stop feed of soul, jazz, and funk. You're not going to get in on mainstream radio, you're only going to get it from sites such as this one and believe me, neosoul is also worth a listen.

Hey, it's something to do at work when the boss is really riding you! LOL. Enjoy.

Heidi Klum: Did she emasculate Seal?

Oct 29, 2007 1:36 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

So, Heidi Klum, the former supermodel and long-time wife of singer Seal, was on Oprah last week and she basically said that the thing that 'sealed' (pun-intended) the deal between her and the Black performer was when she saw him wearing some tight shorts and she checked out his package.

Now, while this may just seem like another random celebrity utterance, the fact of the matter is that historically, Black men have been hypersexualized, infantilized and emasculated by white mainstream culture for centuries. It's part of the legacy of slavery that still lingers. And while Klum and Seal are married, one has to wonder after watching the show why she should have said something like that? My first impression is that she's just completely clueless to anything related to Black history, and as sad as it is, Seal has probably chosen to turn a blind eye to it.

I think interracial relationships are perfectly fine, but know your partner's roots, their struggles and how the outside world will perceive of your union matters! I don't care what anyone says, it has to play a part.

She might as well have said, "this is my boy of a husband" if you ask me. And, don't go blaming Oprah for you coming off sounding like a woman who only married a Black man for the fantasy because she didn't put a gun to your mouth.

Ridiculous.....

Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married is Brilliant

Oct 21, 2007 10:09 AM
SoulMatters Blogger

If you haven't seen it yet, this is one of the best romantic dramas/comedies I have seen in years. Co-starring Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Malik Yoba, Sharon Leal and a sleu of others, it is not over the top in its intentions to show you the ups and downs of married life. Thankfully, Perry's put old Madea to sleep a little bit and has dug a little deeper to create a cast of characters that are complex, dynamic and most importantly, not over the top.

You'll laugh, you may even get a little welled up (especially in scenes with Scott and Janet and their respective husbands), but in all, you'll leave out feeling as though you've just seen a glispe into the world of marriage. It's not easy, but in the end, as this film shows, if you're willing to put in the effort, even the worse of marriages is salvagable if you ask yourself the simple question: why did I get married?

Da Kink In My Hair

Did anyone watch this on Sunday? It premiered on Global TV in Canada. Based on the hit play, Trey Anthony created this show to really be a voice for Black women in Canada. I saw the show and I feel a little torn about it, like whether the format is right for the content. I think it's about time we have a Black sitcom in Canada I mean for crying out loud, it's 2007 but I wonder how far you can push the boundaries of difference until it comes off as being archetypal stereotypes? Having said that, I'll be watching for sure, and you gotta support Anthony because she's just one of those types of persons who deserve respect, but the critical cat inside me can't help but wonder, will a show like this be a help or detriment to the Black identity in Canada?

The New = Lame FLOW 93.5

Oct 3, 2007 10:00 AM
SoulMatters Blogger

Can I tell you how disappointed I am at this station. When it first came on the air, I thought to myself, "self, finally there's going to be a station in Toronto that will cater to Black (not "urban") music, that all people love (Black, white, Asian, Indian), I'm talking Al Green, Jodeci, Jill Scott, Beres Hammond. Real music. Instead, what we have now is incredibly mundane top 40 crap that pretty much is of no interest to anyone over the age of 25. I wouldn't care so much about the programming change except for the fact that because of the station's frequency, I am not able to hear Buffalo's 93.7 fm. Back in the day, for those old enough to remember, 93.7 was the station, you'd hear real hip-hop, soul music with a message, a little bit of that new jack swing. So here we are, about 10 years on the air, and we have a station that is geared almost completely (with the exception of Sunday afternoons) to a specific demographic (think people whose biggest problems in life is figuring out who they're going to take to formal this year).

No one else out there is going to say it, so I'm saying it, Flow 93.5 you completely suck and when you're ready to play serious music, Black music, again, please give the residents of Toronto a call. If you don't want to change your programming at least change your frequency so we can get back to listening to American radio, since they clearly know how to create programming that people (OF ALL AGES) want to hear.

Does it matter who calls who a bitch?

Oct 1, 2007 4:55 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

Former basketball star and one-time Toronto Raptors owner, Isiah Thomas is in the hot seat again. In addition to being involved in a sexual harassment lawsuit, he's also saying that it depends on who calls who a bitch. Specifically, Thomas says if  a white man calls a black woman a bitch it is much worse than a black man calling a black woman a bitch. This is the same kind of double standard that surrounds the N-word. Shouldn't negative speech be the same no matter who utters it? I think men (white or black) should go to work tomorrow and call a black woman a bitch and see her reaction. Somehow, I doubt she's going to say to the black guy, "you're such a sweetheart" and to the white guy, "who you calling a bitch?" I could be completely out of touch with people but it just seems to me that any woman would be and should be equally offended by both.

Where does bitch start and hate begin?

Jill Scott's new ablum

Sep 29, 2007 12:02 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

Jill Scott's got a new album out. It's called The Real Thing, Words & Sounds, Vol. 3. This Philadelphia-born artist brings a refreshing quality to soul music and having seen her live every single time she's come to Toronto, believe me, there ain't too much editing going on in the studio when she cuts an album.

Don't take my word for it, check out her website at: www.jillscott.com.

According to her site, Jill will be appearing on Oprah on October 3, and Ellen on the 4th.  She has several US tour dates then she's in Europe in November. Doesn't look like there's any dates in Canada but don't worry, I'm sure she'll give us some love next summer.

Real music lives ya'll, you just have to go out and find it!

Anyone heard the album yet?

Common wants to act now too?

Sep 28, 2007 4:24 PM
SoulMatters Blogger

I heard this rumour that rapper Common is upset about the fact that he's not joining the acting ranks like others. Namely, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Mos Def. While listening to my favourite new station, v100 fm this morning, it was reported that Common made those comments in a recent Vibe Magazine story.

My thing is this, why is it rappers can't just be rappers anymore?! Everybody wants to be a walking enterprise - i.e. you got to have the clothing line, a perfume you're pushing, or some big make-up contract - but wouldn't it be nice if they just kept rockin' the mic? Is that too much to ask?

I think Common is one of the best rappers of our generation, and why can't that be enough of a title?

Just a thought...
